Desmond Cervantez

Desmond Cervantez has been the Director of Bands at the High School in Solon, Iowa since 1999. Before his public-school teaching career, Desmond taught private trumpet and brass for many years and still maintains a small studio. He is the principal trumpet for the Muscatine Symphony Orchestra and regularly plays trumpet for productions with Theater Cedar Rapids. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Music Performance from Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Missouri, his Master of Music in Performance from Truman State, and received his teacher education certificate from the University of Iowa. Desmond has arranged many works for his own quintet, Cedar River Brass Quintet. He also has arrangements and compositions for solo trumpet and various brass groups. Desmond has several recordings that can be found on most streaming platforms by searching his name.

Emma Gostonczik

​Emma Gostonczik (Ms. G) is a 2022 graduate of the University of Iowa where she studied Music Education, Vocal Performance, and Theatre Arts. She has been the choir director at Solon High School since 2023. At the high school, Emma directs two curricular choirs, two jazz choirs, musical theatre workshop, and is the vocal coordinator for SHS musicals. Beyond the classroom, Emma is involved in Vocal Artists of Iowa and The Mill Creek Band. She loves to travel, read, and hang out with her two cats, Mica and Ruby.

Rachel Ihde

Rachel is a graduate of Drake University and has been teaching 5th-8th grade band at Solon since 2025. Rachel's primary instrument is saxophone, and she loves getting to direct the SMS jazz bands. When she is not teaching, Rachel enjoys reading, watching movies, board games, hiking, and spending time with her cats.

Michelle is a Wartburg College graduate, where she was involved in choir, cross country, and track. She has taught general music in Solon since 2002. Michelle also has a Master's degree in Collaborative Teaching, as well as certificates in Differentiated Instruction and Teacher Leadership. She lives in Solon with her husband, daughter, and son, and enjoys traveling and spending time with family.

Samantha Russell
Musical Director

Since 2018, Samantha Russell has proudly served as the Musical Director at Solon High School, where she has directed over 13 productions. She believes theatre is about more than performance; it’s about building confidence, community, and lifelong memories for students. Creating a safe, inclusive space for all learners is at the heart of her work.
​
Outside the theatre, Samantha enjoys life with her husband, Keagan, and their five dogs. As a former classroom teacher and now an in-home daycare owner, she continues to blend creativity and education in all areas of her life. Samantha is grateful for the opportunity to continue serving her hometown of Solon and supporting students through the arts.
